“Besan Ka Cheela” -- One more easy breakfast recipe which is served in my household on weekends. I would say it does not top the list though, for sunday breakfast as “POHA” takes its place. But this is prepared definitely on a regular basis on weekends. Besan ka cheela can be served as an evening  snack too and provides a lot of carbohydrates to keep you going.

Serves: 4
Preparation time: 10 mins.
Cooking time: 10-15 mins.

1 cup chickpeas flour/besan
¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 medium sized onion (finely chopped)
¼ teaspoon ajwain / carom seeds (optional)
1 inch ginger (grated)
2 green chillies (finely chopped)
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves
Oil to pan fry
½ to ¾ cups water

  1. In a large mixing bowl, take chickpeas flour and add ½ cup of water.
  2. Mix well to get a lump free batter.
  3. Add in spices mentioned above along with onion, green chilli and grated ginger. Mix well again.
  4. Heat a tawa/ griddle and brush it with little oil.
  5. Put around 2 tablespoons of batter in the center of the tawa and spread it in circular motion to make round crepes/cheelas.
  6. Put some oil on the edges and after a minute or so flip to cook the other side of crepe.
  7. Brush a little oil on this side as well.
  8. Cook both sides of crepe until crisp and golden brown.
  9. Serve hot with tomato ketchup or coriander-mint chutney.

  • Mix besan and water and keep aside for 10 minutes. It helps you get lump free batter more easily and saves on your effort.
  • Add more water if batter seems thick.
