Dal Palak| Palak Dal | Palak Toor Dal | Palak Dal Fry | Spinach Dal (Yellow lentils with Spinach )

“Palak Dal” is easy to make meal (lunch or dinner) recipe. This is easy to make dal recipe and also combines the goodness of spinach so I prepare this dal for my kids especially as I want them to incorporate spinach in their daily diet. Palak dal can be made both in pressure cooker or pan but i make it mostly in pressure cooker for a quick fix meal which is healthy and nutritious for kids. It is a great one pot recipe which when combined with roti and rice makes a wholesome meal.


Serves: 3-4
Preparation time: 30 mins.
Cooking time: 20 mins.


Ingredients:


1 cup toor dal (yellow pigeon peas)
1 cups spinach leaves (chopped)
1 medium sized onion (finely chopped)
1 green chilli (finely chopped)
1 tablespoon ghee/ oil
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon Red chilli powder
½ teaspoon garam masala powder
½ teaspoon coriander powder
½ teaspoon cumin seeds
Salt to taste
1-2 tablespoon Lemon juice (or as per taste)


Directions:


  1. Wash the dal and soak in water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Wash and chop the spinach leaves and onion.
  3. In a pressure cooker, heat the ghee and add in cumin seeds.
  4. As they splutter, add in chopped onion. Cook until they become translucent.
  5. Now, add in spinach leaves and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  6. Now, spinach leaves would have wilted, add in dry spices and salt and garam masala powder. Stir and mix well with the spices.
  7. Add in soaked dal with 1 ½ cup of water and give a quick stir. Cover with the pressure cooker lid and cook for 2 whistles on medium flame.
  8. Open the lid when pressure is released and add lemon juice and give a quick stir.
  9. Palak dal is ready to serve with hot phulkas or parathas along with raita of your choice.
